I found this on Peanutbutter Nation and it was posted by the FlipFlops who is apparently President of TADAO.
" The bolt delay is the time after the dwell is over that the eyes are completely ignored. So if your bolt delay is 15 ms, then the eyes won't be monitored until 15 ms after the dwell ends. Why is this necessary? Well, the eyes can't determine which direction the bolt moves. They simply know if the beam is broken, or not. The bolt is still moving forward after the dwell time has ended due to inertia and the fact that the rear of the ram has more surface area, and thus more force acting on it. Sometimes the bolt hasn't even cleared the eyes when the dwell time has ended. The eyes will pick up the gap between the paintball and bolt face, incorrectly thinking that this is the bolt returning, when in reality it is still going forward. This is why you get blank shots. The gap is read as the bolt coming back, so the software goes into the next firing cycle, sees that the beam is broken because the bolt is forward, and initiates another shot. The bolt delay setting makes sure that the gap between the paintball and bolt face is ignored. It gives the bolt enough time to completely block the eyes on the forward stroke. There is a common misconception that the bolt delay setting affects the rate of fire. It can, but only if set EXTREMELY high. Setting it at 10, 15, or 20 ms isn't going to change anything drastically, because the bolt will not return until well after 30 ms. Think of it this way: 1. With a dwell of 8 ms and bolt delay at 10 ms, the bolt is still going forward after the 18 ms have passed, so the eyes come on, and the bolt returns. The eyes see the breech become unblocked, so the next firing cycle can start. 2. Now with a dwell of 8 ms and the bolt delay at 15 ms, perhaps the bolt is completely forward after the 23 ms have passed. The eyes come on and see the bolt as it returns, so the next firing cycle can start. 3. Now with a dwell of 8 ms and bolt delay of 20 ms, perhaps the bolt is just starting to come back after 28 ms have passed. The eyes turn on, see the breech become unblocked, etc. In every case the eyes turn back on and monitor the breech before the bolt crosses the eyes on the return stroke. Rate of fire is never affected. "
