Im new to this type of marker so I hope this doesn't sound like a total idiotic question lol. I'm used to my A5's firing when gassed up whether they're loaded with paint or not. My question then is does the mini NOT fire at all if there's no paint loaded? My mini works great when there's paint in the hopper, but if the hopper is empty I get absolutely nothing when i pull the trigger. I was wondering that if this is just the way the mini works.

The mini has eyes... If there is no ball in the breach it will not shoot. Unless you turn the eyes off (by holding the trigger when turning the marker on).
Hope this helps.

Yep what XaBoo said. In fact if it does fire without a ball in the breach, you might have a problem.

To test this, Stick your finger down the feedneck and fire without air attached.
